The Cali Cartel, the Medellin Cartel’s rival was founded by the Rodriguez Orejuela brothers, Gilberto and Miguel, as well as their associate Jose Santacruz Londoño. Situated in Cali, Colombia this cartel was one of the most powerful ones in 90s. They weren’t only based in Colombia, they were also settled in Central, South, and North American countries such as: Canada, USA, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Panama, Bolivia, Venezuela, and even in SPAIN which is a European country.
The Cali Cartel, began trafficking marijuana, and soon shifted to cocaine due to its ease of transportation and greater profit margin. It is said that from the 100% of cocaine exports from Colombia 90% of it was exported by the Cali Cartel. This cartel also controlled 90% of the European cocaine market. This cartel earned US$7 billion from exports to the US. This cartel is very well known for being very violent, they would usually kill a member over any mistake.
The cartel started to decline between the years 1995-1998 when six of the seven heads of the cartel were arrested by the Colombian police.
